Hey boo - finally got a good hour free today to play FFXIII! Takes some getting back into - was really happy for the first 20 min or so (if really clumsy!) but then realized all the things that annoy me about the installment are still there and kind of jump to the forefront
Not nearly as bad as the first 60% where you were stuck in a tunnel - but things like not being able to access a whole world map to see which areas connect to one another (you can only see the locale where you are so plotting how to get from one area to another without teleporting (how is that not a word spellcheck?! Lol apparently neither is spellcheck
) is really annoying and either requires a great memory or google
Also I HATE the whole trying to upgrade equipment thing. I have always hated when games make you do that - I'd MUCH rather just have each weapon or accessory have it's own little HP, benefits, drawbacks, etc and have that be the end of it. I really dislike the whole management side of things - I'd rather be out there exploring and fighting than spending hours rooting around my rutsack to find the optimal combination of upgrades to give my people the best edge. I'm a fighter not a bloody tailor or accountant dammit.
Same goes for how you have to pick and choose battle teams - and roles within the battle - that you can't switch up in the middle of the whole thing. You get 6 slots for battle team formations - but the fact that you really need more than that for optimal fighting - and beyond that I need to be able to tell each person what precisely within their role I want them to be doing - is annoying. Things like if I am playing Fang as a sabatour - and hope is on as a synergist - and he keeps spamming the team with that sword thing - upping our physical strength - when really I just want him to stick shell on the whole group so I can switch him back to medic - is annoying. I REALLY miss gambits. They were so damn useful and allowed you to customize how your team worked without bogging you down in defining every hit they made individually.
Also what the hell in terms of if my lead character dies suddenly the rest of the group just gives up and says screw it I'm so over this battle? Which is itself just an extension of the whole you can't sub in other players for dead ones. Dude... so three people are just sitting on the sidelines watching the rest of the team get slaughtered? That seems wrong.
On a related note the hell with not letting you spam protection on your team outside of battles. I know you can use those potions or whatev - but you need to replace those whereas it makes so much more sense to have your people able to perform magic outside of the context of a battle. It fits in with the whole using the archaic hey battles aren't part of everyday life - it's like you enter your own little arena whenever you encounter anything! - mindset which in itself annoys me - I like it when you can run around and just encounter beasts - and not leave the screen or anything - you can run and hide behind things while fighting - or escape only to come back and still have it injured - the whole sticking you on a separate screen thing just to fight really distracts me from the part of the game I like which is the exploration.
Anywho - I know it sounds like I don't like the game - which is totally wrong - I love it, I just see a ton of faults with it that were corrected in previous versions that they somehow reverted back to a suckier way of doing things for this one. Le Sigh - but the characters are still awesome and I love the graphics
Gran Pulse - when you're not being sucked into silly battles where the opening animation takes longer than the fight itself - is gorgeous as always
